May Volunteer Recognition

Updated: Jul 12, 2021

Another month has come and gone, as we count down the days until summer. In May, we welcomed back even more volunteers, some familiar and some new faces, at our county distributions. As we open up more volunteer slots to groups and individuals, we are grateful for everyone who has stepped up and volunteered with us to minimize hunger in our communities!

In the month of May, we held 26 distributions in Clark, Champaign, and Logan Counties, providing over 150,000 meals to more than 6,300 households. With the warmer weather and summer right around the corner, our volunteers had a great time out in the community distributing food.

In April, Orbis Corporation, based in Urbana, started volunteering with Second Harvest Food Bank. Ten Orbis employees signed up to volunteer at our Champaign County Fairgrounds distributions for three months.

“When you do something good for others, it helps you feel good inside,” shared Margaret Mitterholzer, Sales Support Specialist at Orbis. “Giving back is always needed. I think it builds character. It’s easy and doesn’t take much effort to do.”

Margaret volunteered at the Champaign County Fairgrounds distribution in both April and May. This month, she helped pass out cans of peaches and sweet potatoes. Looking back at her first time volunteering in April, she remembered sifting through oranges with her colleague to ensure they gave quality oranges to everyone in line. While it was a lot of work, it was rewarding knowing that they were helping to give out fresh food.

Growing up, Margaret always volunteered with her parents, and she looks forward to passing down the tradition of getting involved and volunteering to her own children. That’s also why Margaret is thankful for the opportunity to give back to her community through Orbis.

“I’m glad that Orbis signed up to have their employees volunteer,” Margaret said. “It shows a lot about who the company is, especially when they allow their salaried employees to come out and volunteer on the clock.”

Margaret’s enthusiasm for volunteerism was obvious as she recounted her experience with SHFB thus far. She wrapped up by saying, “I’m volunteering again next month, and I’m excited to help again!”

And we are excited to have you help as well! Thank you, Margaret, and everyone at Orbis for volunteering with us and serving the Champaign County community!
