September is Hunger Action Month, a month dedicated to fighting food insecurity in America by raising awareness about hunger and doing things like volunteering, fundraising, and donating to food banks and other hunger-relief, food-advocacy organizations. Today, September 17, is Hunger Action Day. There is no better time to take action against hunger. What can you do to participate?
Learn
There are several things you can do to participate in Hunger Action Month. The first is educating yourself on the prevalence of hunger in your community. Hunger is a widespread problem and can be found in every corner of the world, including your own.
Feeding America has a very informative interactive map of the United States where you can find detailed hunger information from every county in every state.
Speak Up
Use your voice to fight against hunger. Feeding America is leading a few initiatives to change government policies that make it difficult for American citizens to have access to food.
Send a message to Congress, telling them that no one who served in the military should struggle to feed themselves or their family.
Send your member of Congress a virtual paper plate to demonstrate how much you care about your neighbors who don’t have enough to eat.
Send a message about the importance of SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program), a federal program that helps people feed their families by expanding their grocery budgets. You can help prevent any spending cuts to this vital program.
Check out this Weekly Harvest blog post to learn the truth behind some common SNAP myths.
